July 23: Playoff game, Dragons vs Chegs. We started OK, we were up 2-1 after the first inning, but then the Chegs got 5, and we were down 6-2 after the second. In the top of the third the Dragons got 3, but the Chegs came back with 7 in the seemingly endless, painful, bottom of that inning. At that point we were behind 13-5. For the rest of the game our defense was effective, the Chegs did not get any more runs. In each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings the Chegs had only four batters, left one runner on base. In fairness, I must say they had a large number of reserve players, and those last innings were played against an almost completely different team than we had faced in the first three. But nevertheless, our defense was good. Unfortunately, their second team's defense was also good. They got the Dragons out 1, 2, 3 in the 4th and 5th. In the sixth we had 6 batters and scored one run, leaving two runners on base. In the seventh we also had six batters. With two out we had the bases loaded and Kelley hit a really long fly toward center field that ought to have been a grand slam. Unfortunately, their center fielder was was able to catch it, and thus the game (and the season) ended with a final score of Chegs 13, Dragons 6. July 19: A victory! Dragons 15, Charlie's 14. What a game! Our last of the regular season, a rain makeup from July 2nd. Charlie's probably expected to make quick work of the Dragons, they came into this with an 11-7 record and we were 2-16. And in their first at-bat, Charlie's scored a quick 4 runs. We got back 2 in the bottom of the first, and after that it looked like we might run away with the game. We got 4 in the 2nd and 5 in the third, they were 0 and 1 in those innings and it was Dragons 11-5 after 3. The Dragons defense continued to be strong, and although we didn't have more big innings we were ahead 13-6 at the end of the 5th and 14-8 at the end of the 6th. But then in the top of the 7th Charlie's got two runs before their first out, and then four more to tie the game at 14-14 before we finally got the last two outs. But we pulled it out in the bottom of the last inning -- Carla led off with a single, and then Mark tripled her home -- end of game, end of regular season, end of story... July 16: We were short-handed, only 6 players on hand, so we forfeited to the Unnatural Selection and then played a scrimmage with three teams of five, an interesting way to get some practice playing with new people and expreimenting with positions. The exercise terminated when someone noticed that hair was standing on end as thnderstorms approached.
